Veterinary Specialties

The Veterinary Specialties Available at NorthStar VETS®

At NorthStar VETS, our veterinarians are board-certified, residency-trained, or have received certification in a particular therapy. You can feel confident that your pet will receive the highest-quality clinical care in these specialty disciplines:

Our commitment to excellence is reflected in our choice of veterinarians. They support our mission to provide quality and compassionate care for animals, and a dedication to delivering exceptional service.

Specialist Appointments are Made by Referral From Your Family Veterinarian

NorthStar VETS is a specialty referral hospital, which means that your pet is referred to one of our specialists by your primary care/family veterinarian. If you have questions, our Client Liaisons are available to help.

The Difference Between a Board-Certified Specialist and a Family Veterinarian

A board-certified specialist not only has completed four years of undergraduate school and four years of veterinary school but also a one-year internship and a two- to three-year residency in a chosen specialty. Then, the doctor must publish original research and take a national exam, known as “boards.” Upon successfully passing the exam, the specialist receives the highly distinguished Diplomate status, certifying their expertise in a chosen specialty.
